Hank Feinberg
Our Second BCUG Webinar of the Year!
"Into the Cloud --
the Future of Computing"
MEETING DATE: April 20, 2012

We are proud to announce our Second of Three Spring Webinars to be given by Hank Feinberg, from the APCUG Speakers Bureau. Hank is familiar with the needs of User Groups and has extensive experience in speaking on various topics at all levels of expertise.

Hank will clarify for us what the cloud is and how we can utilize it. He will talk about available applications, current providers, security. He will also discuss differences between public and private clouds, and more.

One definition of “Cloud Computing” is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, which means that “shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices as a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network (typically the Internet)” (from Wikipedia).

The term "cloud" has been in use, originally in the context of schematics used by network administrators, and later to describe the Internet. Currently, the cloud is used to describe any type of virtual computing which involves the Internet rather than your local hard drive. This conceptual change may be difficult to understand at first; Hank will enlighten us as to the usefulness (and safety) of this new technological advance.

In addition to the ease and usefulness of cloud computing, it has several characteristics
    Empowerment of end-users;
    Application programming interface (API) accessibility;
    Cost reduction;
    Improved reliability; and
    Application maintenance

There are many, many more points to be made. Perhaps this partial list will engender some thought and discussion for you during the presentation.
